Supplements before training, post training, intra training and now even nigth? Feels like we should be taking supplements ALL the time! But in all due fact my most important timing(s) to take my supplements are with breakfast and at night. The extra ones I take are just before training and that's truly it. The importance of certain key elements at night are crucial to recovery and growth, since many of you know our body's recovery and grow for big part while we sleep. Some think our bodies actually 'go to sleep' at night when in fact only our minds do. Everything else is in fact operating if anything at higher pace. Specially our hormones. Our natural levels of HGH (human growth hormones) are at their highest naturally while we are sleeping. So sleep is CRUCIAL for growth and is an important as eating and exercising on a regular basis.
So what supplements should you be taking at night to enhance your recovery and help you sleep better?
Multiminera/Vitamin - If you did or did not take this with breakfast it's still another great time to take it again. My multimineral /vitamin tells me that 1 full serving is 3 tablets, so what I do is take 2 in the AM with brekfast and the last tablet at night. Specially for those who train,do cardio and have high activity level jobs providing the body with a bit more at night to ensure the body did not run out of something is crucial.
Argenine - I thought Argenine was a pre-workout supplement? Well that's what it's mainly marketed and used for, to give you a better pump in the gym, but several studies have shown that taking 3g of argenine help release natural growth hormone levels in your body. Talk about a HUGE benefit. As a guy, it's totally okay if you wake up at nigth with your "manhood" standing up, this means the argenine is also doing it's job.
Melatonin - There's a lot of products out there for enhancing sleep and melatonin is a very common one. Now...the misconception is that it helps you fall asleep faster. For many that's just a placebo effect as in it's true nature melatonin actually doesn't help you fall asleep faster but it helps you have better sleep once you are asleep. It helps improve your quality of sleep, which is huge. 3-6mg of melatonin will do it.
Whey or Casein - Why Whey you might be asking. Well let me take a step backwards first. If you are on a low budget you don't even need either of these. It takes your digestion a while to digest a piece of steak or chicken at night. But..! If you want to get a good spectrum of amino acids, glutamine and more, products like 100% Whey Gold Standard and 100% Casein will do it. Now again again why Whey if it's a fast digestion product. For many casein fills them up too much, makes them feel bloated and feel umcomfortably. So whey can be used with almond milk to slow the digestion the same way and still get the benefits of amino acid delivery at night.
Exta budget? - Then let's talk about extra stuff to help you sleep and recover faster:
ZMA - Again, another product that many thing it is making them fall asleep faster, but in reality it's just Zinc, Magnessium and Vitamin B6. So get all of these in your multimineral/vitamin and that's not makign you fall asleep. But the benefit of supplement extra zinc as a man is that it helps you naturally product testosterone.
GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) - It may help fight Ssress, support a stable mood, and encourage restful sleep. By inhibiting the quantity of neurons firing in the brain, GABA may help calm the brain. I've been using this guy and it can make you feel a bit dizzy when you wake up if you don't sleep well enough so just be aware of that.
Most importantly make sure you are at least getting those 6 hours minimum of sleep every night if you can for a full recovery. I have so many clients tell me how their days are completely affect from their lack of sleep and it makes total sense. After all, when you go to bed you plug in your cellphone charge and let it sit there so that the next day it can run with 100% battery. Imagine how annoying it would be to have to start your day with 50% battery every day and always be aware of how it could just die on you.
